JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Mechanic assists the Senior Mechanic in diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on all company fleet vehicles in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications. This position uses knowledge of garage tools and testing equipment to help analyze and resolve fleet maintenance issues, diagnose and repair minor electrical system problems using wiring schematics and electrical test equipment, and maintain accurate maintenance and repair records. The Mechanic identifies and obtains replacement parts needed for repairs, assists with maintaining inventory and shop equipment, safely operates related machinery and tools, and promotes safe and environmentally responsible workplace practices. Mechanics are required to be on call every other weekend and work overtime for special events.

Compensation: $29.00 per hour

Work Schedule:  40 hours per week, Monday-Friday with rotating weekends on call

Responsibilities:
  1. Assist with preventive maintenance on all gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment, including trucks, buses, trams, fire engines, tractors, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, portable generators, blowers, backhoes, snow removal equipment, and miscellaneous small engines.
  2. Assist with minor repairs and seasonal preparation of equipment such as mowers, snowplows, and trams, including brake work, tire installation, and oil changes. Safely operate related machinery and tools, including power tools, wheel balancers, brake lathes, and vehicles.
  3. Assist with major and minor vehicle and equipment repairs, including electrical and hydraulic wheelchair lift systems on ADA vehicles. Perform minor brazing and welding; troubleshoot, maintain, and repair brake systems; and learn to read and interpret hydraulic schematics.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Experience: High school or trade school diploma or equivalent with four years of experience as an auto mechanic
Preferred Experience: Experience with small engines preferred

Knowledge/Skills:
  1. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  2. Knowledge of the operation and safe use of shop equipment and tools.
  3. Working knowledge of hydraulic systems.
  4. Knowledge of the operation and safe use of garage tools and testing equipment.
  5. Ability to identify replacement parts needed to complete repairs.
  6. Ability to analyze and resolve fleet maintenance issues.
  7. Ability to diagnose and repair minor electrical system issues using wiring schematics and electrical test equipment.
  8. Ability to safely operate related machinery and tools, including power tools, wheel balancers, brake lathes, and vehicles.

Essential Functions:
  1. Maintain a valid driver’s license and complete a defensive driving course.
  2. Climb ladders and scaffolding as needed.
  3. Work outdoors in conditions that may include mud, snow, rain, heat, and humidity.
  4. Lift items weighing up to 40 pounds.
  5. Work in areas where paints, lubricants, dust, and dirt may be present.
  6. Work near hazardous substances and in loud environments; appropriate PPE is required.
